No Shirt in Stock: Why Print-on-Demand Is Our Answer to the Fashion Industry
Share
The fashion industry has a numbers problem. Estimates suggest that a significant portion of clothing produced worldwide is never worn – manufactured on speculation, calculated based on trend forecasts that are as often wrong as they are right. Warehouses full of shirts that nobody ordered end up in sales, incineration, or landfills. At GeorgWerner, we have deliberately chosen against this principle.
Every shirt you buy from us does not exist beforehand. There is no shelf, no batch that was produced "on spec." Only when you click "Order" is your design printed – on an organic cotton shirt, fairly produced, just for you. This is called print-on-demand, and for us, it's not a marketing buzzword, but the only way we want to make sportswear with a clear conscience.
Why this is more than "sustainability sounds good"
The obvious advantage: no overproduction, no waste, no sell-offs below value. But it also has a second effect, which is at least as important to us – creative freedom. Because we don't have to consider minimum order quantities or sold-out inventories, we can venture designs that a classic collection with a thousand-piece minimum order would never dare. A design for "Around the World" doesn't have to prove it can sell 500 times before it's even allowed to be printed. It just has to be good.
This also means: every design you see from us is unique in the sense that it does not come from mass production with remaining stock. We develop the designs with AI tools as a tool – but the direction, the selection, the final word on what is good enough to go on a shirt, is ours. Honest design, in short: self-made, not stolen, and not produced on speculation.
Of course, this model also has its limitations. Print-on-demand means slightly longer delivery times than "immediately from stock," because your shirt only gets printed when you order it. For us, that's a fair trade: a few more days of waiting versus the certainty that no resources were wasted for your shirt and no ten others ended up in the trash so that yours could exist.
The next time you wear a GeorgWerner shirt, whether from the Retro Shirts, Around the World, or Water Nomads collections – you'll know: It wasn't produced in the hope that it would sell. It was made because you wanted it. Exactly how sportswear should be created.
