Digital Divide
In an increasingly digitized world, the digital divide
represents one of the greatest challenges of our time. It describes
the gap between people who have access to digital technologies
and information, and those who do not
possess this access. This inequality manifests itself in various
areas of life, particularly in education, the labor market, and
social participation. A deep understanding of these inequalities is
crucial, as they not only affect individual life paths
but also entail far-reaching social and economic
consequences.
The digital divide encompasses more than just access to devices
or internet connections; it also includes differences in
digital literacy. While some people can effectively use digital technologies,
others struggle to learn or apply basic
digital skills. According to a 2023 study by the Federal Statistical Office,
30% of the German population lacks basic digital
skills, which significantly limits their participation in the digital society
(Statistisches Bundesamt, 2023). This discrepancy
exacerbates inequality, as those with digital skills
have better opportunities in the labor market and can participate more actively in
social life.
