GOTS-certified: What the organic label on your shirt really means

"Organic cotton" appears on quite a few labels. But what does that actually mean – and who verifies that it's true? For GeorgWerner, the answer is a seal that we don't just stick on, but one that our entire supply chain must adhere to: GOTS, the Global Organic Textile Standard.

We often get the question: "Is this really organic, or is it just a marketing term?" Rightly so – the term is used inflationarily. That's why we're honestly breaking down what GOTS specifically means and why it was important enough for us to make it the basis of our shirts.

What GOTS actually verifies

GOTS is not a label of origin, but a process standard. This means that it's not enough for the cotton plant to have been organically grown somewhere. For a finished shirt to bear the seal, at least 95% of the fibers must come from certified organic cultivation – without synthetic pesticides, without genetic engineering, with crop rotation instead of monoculture. But GOTS goes further than just fiber origin: dyeing, bleaching, and finishing must also be carried out with strict chemical limits, wastewater must be treated, and social minimum standards apply along the entire production chain – living wages, no child labor, safe working conditions. Each stage is independently audited, not just once, but continuously.

In short: GOTS doesn't just ask "where does the cotton come from," but "what happened to it before it reached you" – and "under what conditions was the shirt sewn." Precisely this combination of ecological and social demands was the reason why we did not consider any other seal.

Why this is particularly important for a sports shirt

Sportswear often has an image problem when it comes to sustainability – a lot of synthetic material, a lot of chemicals for finishing, a lot of throwaway mentality due to rapid collection changes. We wanted the opposite: a shirt that feels good on the skin because it was processed without aggressive chemicals, and that you wear for a long time because it is well made – not because you have to wear it to avoid wasting your money.

Organic cotton alone doesn't make a good shirt.
