Not a Return Paradise: Why We Rethink Returns at GeorgWerner
Share
"Just order three sizes, send two back" – this phrase has almost become a fundamental rule in the fashion industry. Entire business models are built upon it: returns are calculated into the price, sometimes even expected. That doesn't work for GeorgWerner. And quite honestly: We don't want it to work that way either.
Why we cannot factor in returns
We only print each shirt once you order it. No warehouse full of sizes and colors from which we can simply ship generously. Every item that comes back to us is a shirt that has already cost organic cotton, energy, and labor time – and one that we cannot simply put back on a shelf like a fast-fashion retailer. For print-on-demand, a high return rate is not a line item in the budget, but a real problem. That is why it is important to us that you don't even get into the situation of having to return something.
For us, this primarily means one thing: honest information before you order. Realistic product photos instead of beautified studio shots, a size chart that we regularly compare with actual customer feedback, and product descriptions that occasionally say "this shirt runs rather slim" instead of just trying to sell. We would rather answer one extra question before the order than send out a return label afterward.
What happens if something doesn't fit
Of course, we aren't a guarantee of perfection – sometimes a size won't fit, or a design looks different on screen than it does on your body. When that happens, we are here for you: personally, simply, and without standard automated responses. We prefer an exchange to a return into the void, because every shirt that finds a home is better for you and the environment than one that ends up in some return warehouse.
What you won't experience with us: returned goods being destroyed because reprocessing them isn't financially worthwhile. Because we produce on a small scale and are designed for unique items, such a scenario is structurally almost impossible here – another quiet advantage of print-on-demand that is rarely discussed.
Buy consciously instead of returning conveniently
Ultimately, it is not about preventing returns with strict rules, but about modeling a different shopping culture. Take two minutes for the size chart. Actually read the product description. And if you are unsure, write to us – before you order, not afterward. A shirt that fits right away and that you wear for a long time is, in the end, the most sustainable shirt of all. That is exactly why we do what we do: honest design, self-made, not stolen – and also honestly sold, without a return carousel in the background.
