Summer over, shirt intact: how to safely transition your sportswear into autumn
Share
Summer is ending, but your shirts haven't come through it entirely unscathed. Chlorine, sweat, sunscreen, and a few washes at too high a temperature along the way – if you pause for a moment now, at the end of the season, and give your sportswear some attention, it will stay loyal to you next year too. So, today is not about a new shirt, but about the one you already have.
The last wash of the season counts for double
Before a shirt disappears into the closet for weeks or months, it should be truly clean – and not just on the surface. Residue from sweat, sunscreen, or chlorine that remains in the fabric quietly degrades the fibers, even if you don't see it at first. Wash at a maximum of 30 degrees, turn the shirt inside out, and avoid fabric softener – it forms a film on the fibers and blocks the very breathability that functional fabrics are designed for – and let it air dry instead of using the dryer. The dryer is the greatest enemy of organic cotton and technical blends: it shrinks the fibers and makes the material brittle over time.
Only storing items once they are truly dry pays off. Moisture in the closet is the beginning of mold stains and musty odors that you won't be able to get rid of come spring. A quick check for loose seams or small holes is also part of it – it's better to mend a seam now than to discover in the spring that a small tear has become a large hole.
Why this is especially worthwhile with us
We only print each design once you order – no stock, no overproduction, no shirt destined for the trash before it's even sold. But this also means: every shirt we produce should be worn for as long as possible, not replaced after one season. Care is therefore not just a nice extra tip for us, but the logical continuation of the principle with which we produce in the first place. A shirt that lasts for three years instead of one is ultimately a more sustainable decision than any new item, no matter how organically certified it is.
So: wash mindfully, store dry, check briefly for damage – and when a shirt comes back out of the closet in the spring, it will accompany you just as it did on the first day. Whether it's a retro print, a wanderlust motif, or a calm Water Nomads design – honest design deserves honest care.
