Why our retro shirts don't wait for trends

There is one question that reaches us more often than we thought: Why does a brand that has explicitly stepped out of the fashion calendar create a collection called "Retro" at all? It sounds like a contradiction at first. But it isn't.
"Retro Shirts" is our most playful collection – Y2K inspirations, saturated colors, motifs that remind you more of an old mixtape cover than a serious sports brand. But the point is: We don't orient ourselves toward what is currently "in" again. We orient ourselves toward aesthetics that shaped us personally – and which, coincidentally, are also resurfacing culturally right now. That is a distinction that is important to us.
Nostalgia as a starting point, not a copy
Every motif in "Retro Shirts" is created according to the same principle as our other collections: The creative impulse comes from us – from real memories, old photos, color combinations that we have in our heads from the late 90s and early 2000s. AI tools help us translate these ideas into a motif that didn't exist in that form before. No scraping of old graphics, no "in the style of" prompt that imitates someone else's work. To us, honest design means: self-made, not stolen – even if the result looks like a time that has already passed.
It is important for us to emphasize this, especially with a retro collection. It would be easy to simply grab old templates and reprint them. We don't do that. Each shirt is unique, developed specifically for this collection, with a clear idea behind it – not recycled inventory.
Playful doesn't mean arbitrary
While "Water Nomads" stands for tranquility and "Around the World" for wanderlust, "Retro Shirts" is the place for lightness. For shirts you wear because they put you in a good mood, not because they have to be a statement about sustainable consumption (even though they still are, of course – more on that in a moment). This collection is allowed to be louder, is allowed to play, is allowed to be a little silly sometimes. That is exactly what is sometimes missing in a range that otherwise focuses more on understatement.
And yet, the exact same rules apply to "Retro Shirts" as to every other GeorgWerner collection: organic materials, fair production, printed only when an order is received. No overproduction, no warehouse full of shirts that someone might buy someday. For us, nostalgia is no reason to deviate from our standards – it is simply another mood that we implement using the same principles.
So, the next time you see one of our retro motifs: It is not a trend we are chasing. It is a memory we took seriously enough to print.
