Having a shirt printed: classic vs. print-on-demand
When you search for "having a shirt printed," you are probably thinking first of a copy shop or an online service where you upload your own photo or logo and have a shirt printed with it. That is a legitimate and common model – it’s just not what we do.
At Georg Werner, the designs are created by us: I design every motif myself, with the support of modern AI tools, but the idea, the direction, and the final decision rest with me. So you aren't choosing a blank shirt to design yourself, but a finished, unique design that you won't find anywhere else. What we do have in common with the classic "having a shirt printed" approach is the principle behind it: print-on-demand.
What is print-on-demand? Meaning explained simply
Print-on-demand (POD for short) literally means "printing on request." Instead of producing large quantities in advance and storing them in a warehouse, each individual shirt is only printed when a concrete order is received. No shirt leaves production without someone having said beforehand: "I want that."
That sounds trivial, but it is a fundamental difference from classic fashion production, where collections are manufactured in large quantities months in advance – on speculation, hoping that enough customers will buy them.
Why this is more than just a marketing term
The classic textile industry is estimated to produce 30 to 40% more than is actually sold in the end. A significant portion of newly produced clothing remains unsold and, in the worst case, ends up in the trash or is destroyed because storage is more expensive than disposal (gruender.de).
Print-on-demand reverses this principle: only what is actually purchased is produced. This means less resource consumption, less waste, and no inventory that has to be discounted or disposed of at some point (Printful). Many modern digital printing processes (direct-to-garment) also function without solvent-based inks and operate without water, making them one of the more environmentally friendly printing techniques (gruender.de).

How exactly does print-on-demand work at Georg Werner?
- Design comes first. Every motif is designed by me – with head, heart, and AI support, but without copying off-the-shelf designs.
- You place an order. The print job is triggered only with your order – not before.
- We print on certified organic shirts. Our shirts are made of GOTS-certified organic cotton, grown without synthetic pesticides and fertilizers.
- No warehouse, no overproduction. There is no shelf full of unsold shirts in your size that will eventually be discounted or destroyed.

Is print-on-demand automatically sustainable?
No – and we prefer to be honest about that rather than sugarcoating it. Print-on-demand avoids overproduction and reduces inventory, which is a real advantage over classic mass production. But it does not automatically make a shirt sustainable if the base material is conventional cotton or polyester of questionable origin.
